The La Plata Mountain Range

The La Plata Mountain Range

This weekend I had a great friend come and visit, which lead into a very nice mini-vacation from work! We left Mesa Verde Saturday morning with a great view of the La Plata Mountains covered in snow. Who was my friend you may ask, well it was my friend Jason, who I meet not too long ago! We ended up having a spectacular weekend!

Colorado never fails to simply amaze me with how often the landscape changes, we drove east for about three hours to the town of Pagosa Springs. Something I really miss here at Mesa Verde is large amounts of fresh water…. like rivers, streams, creeks, and waterfalls!  We decided to drive out to do a small portion of the Williams Creek trail the first day, and the second head back to that area to view Piedra Falls, and hike along the Piedra River.
To find out more about the hiking trails, check out Pagosa Springs website!

The hike to see the Piedra Falls was very simple; a short half mile hike. The drive to get there was simply gorgeous. We followed the trail to reach the falls, and you could get surprsingly close to view them! On the way back to the car, we decided to follow the river instead of the trail, climbing on boulders, walking on logs, and generally not acting like our age. 🙂 It was certainly a good time.

I definitely fell in love with the Piedra River, it was a beautiful place. Before we began the hike down the trail next to the river, I saw a sign that said they were trying to re-introduce the River Otter, and I squealed with delight! However, we didn’t see any otters along our hike, but I kept looking!
It was a lovely weekend, full of gorgeous views and some great company.

Driving back to Mesa Verde we were blessed with an amazing sunset, and a great view of Sleeping Ute Mountain!

Can you see a man laying down? The largest peak is his arms crossed over his chest, his head to the right, his toes way down on the left.
